[BIM Software Implementation Case] Pepper Tree Quarry

Conducted 3D laser scanning and integrated it as a point cloud on the reconstructed Tekla model!

In 2013, Sandvik received a project from their client Boral for a quarry located in Pepper Tree. The factory, located in Sydney, Australia, is equipped with six crushers, nine screening machines (vibrating screens), a conveyor belt approximately 3.4 km long, and a fully automated loading system. This project was one of the more complex ones undertaken by the company. The main challenge was integrating the complex new equipment into the existing factory, which had not been designed for it, and not all existing blueprints were available. By importing from other applications, utilizing past Tekla models, and performing rough modeling of the remaining parts, a complete three-dimensional model of the factory was reconstructed in "Tekla Structure" using the existing model and drawing information. Scanning the existing factory with Trimble's 3D laser scanner made it possible to compare the model with the actual factory, serving as the foundation for the design of the new equipment. *For more details, please feel free to contact us. ⇩ The catalog can be downloaded from the special website below ⇩

[BIM Software Implementation Case] Linnanmaki Amusement Park

Modeling the foundation and ride facilities of a roller coaster, and constructing it between existing attractions!

The roller coaster at Linnanmäki Amusement Park in Helsinki, Finland, began construction in 2018 and was completed in 2019. The project was agreed to be carried out during the amusement park's off-peak season, so the demolition work started after the summer peak season and the attraction needed to be completed before the following summer. Ensuring sufficient distance from existing structures and facilities was a major challenge in determining the shape of the roller coaster, and the varying landscape due to height was also a consideration in designing the foundation. The contractor conducted extensive laser scanning of the bedrock surface at the construction site, and this information was used in the design of the foundation for excavation and the installation of stress anchors. "Tekla Structures" can incorporate laser-scanned terrain data, allowing for the design of the foundation that secures the rails based on that data. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us. [BIM Software Implementation Case Study] Denver International Airport Expansion Project

All stakeholders use Tekla to achieve efficient collaboration! Case study on the introduction of BIM software.

At Denver International Airport, the construction of a new train station connecting downtown to the airport and a hotel is underway. The design of this hotel, including its curved roof, evokes the image of an airplane when viewed as a whole. To achieve this exterior, which consists of many curved surfaces and intricate parts, technology was required to accurately process various complexly bent shapes of plates. Therefore, the project team set it up so that the coordinate location information output from "Tekla Structures" is automatically displayed on each fabrication drawing. This made precise processing possible. By having all stakeholders use Tekla, it has become easier for team members to carry out various tasks such as planning, data exchange, and defect corrections, thereby achieving efficient collaboration. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us. [BIM Software Implementation Case] Heating Furnace for Oil Refining Plant

The model object perfectly matches the blueprint! The design team is flexible in responding to major changes!

In this project, we are engineering a heating furnace with an air preheater, platform, and auxiliary support structures. There were two major challenges in this project. The first was the need to fit equipment into the confined space of the existing plant, while also facing constraints in the work area due to project specifications and equipment requirements. Through three-dimensional modeling with "Tekla Structures," we were able to accurately understand all requirements early in the project, evaluate the pros and cons of possible options, and confirm accessibility. The next challenge arose from layout changes to the equipment that occurred later in the project, necessitating extensive additional design work that affected both structural components and auxiliary support structures. Since the model objects perfectly matched the design drawings, the design team was able to respond flexibly to significant changes, mitigate impacts on the project schedule, and proactively avoid serious issues that could arise in design and fabrication. *For more details, please feel free to contact us. ⇩ The catalog can be downloaded from the special site below ⇩*

[BIM Software Implementation Case Study] Agora Evry Arena

Even when faced with unexpected challenges, it became possible to continue working by utilizing Tekla Model Sharing.

This construction is a renovation project for the Agora Evry Arena, which was built as an auditorium in 1970. At that time, it was a complex project that required high technical skills, and the expertise of the Bordan Châtauneuf team was necessary for the construction. The first challenge of this project was to recreate the design model of the existing building from scratch in order to add a new structure. The modeling was based on a manual created by Bordan Châtauneuf in 1970. Using point cloud data obtained from a 3D scan of the existing structure, the components were adjusted by a few centimeters. It was confirmed that the measured point cloud data had position information very close to that of the actual building. This "research" faced several unexpected challenges, but despite the difficulties, it became possible to continue working by utilizing Tekla ModelSharing.

[BIM Software Implementation Case Study] Forum Groningen

The created drawings total over 28,000 sheets! Temporary support structures used during installation have also been modeled!

The steel structure of the Forum Groningen, designed by NL Architects, consists of eight steel "masses" made of spatial trusses fixed on two concrete cores that serve as the foundation. These concrete cores are connected at the top by a bridge structure, designed to have deflections in separate directions, requiring the steel "masses" to also face in their respective directions. The detailed design, fabrication, assembly, tolerance assurance, and logistics of such a twisted structure proved to be complex, presenting significant challenges. As a result, all of the main structure, as well as the supporting structure of the facade made of natural stone that moves in three directions (2,600 tons), were modeled using Tekla. The design, modeling, production drawing creation, fabrication, and installation were carried out concurrently at two locations, but were executed on schedule thanks to the collaboration of the engineering team. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us. [BIM Software Implementation Case] AFAS Stadium

An example of minimizing miscommunication and work-related errors!

In August 2019, part of the roof of the Morenaar Stand at AFAS Stadium collapsed due to strong winds. Fortunately, there were no matches taking place, and no injuries were reported, but the damage was significant. There was a design flaw in the structural joints, with insufficient thickness in the welds, and damage from strong winds experienced in the past contributed to the collapse. At the end of 2019, ASK Romein was selected for the design and structural engineering, and they began collaborating with BAM Bouw en Techniek. BIM was maximally utilized throughout the engineering process, enabling clear communication among project stakeholders and seamless interaction between different software. Since there are many points of contact between the existing structure and the new structure, point cloud data measured with a 3D scanner is being used in the engineering and assembly processes. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us. This facility, which has buildings and storage tanks installed on a site of over 10 hectares, utilizes Nordic construction methods for underground excavation. The project is diverse and presents many challenges, while also featuring a very interesting design. The biggest challenge has been managing the vast amount of data handled in the project. The design employs numerous modeling software, including "Tekla Structures" and "Trimble Connect." Additionally, all structural design is carried out based on BIM and is modeled in greater detail than the level of detail (LOD) specified by Finland's COBIM. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us. [BIM Software Implementation Case Study] Stadium Renovation Project

Transmitting vertical loads to two linked pendulums! Introducing a case where circulation within the stadium has improved!

We would like to introduce a case study on the introduction of BIM software for the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium renovation project. The new fixed roof, which uses over 9,000 tons of steel, consists of two trusses spanning 177 meters in length and four cross trusses measuring 144 meters in length. This roof is retractable and splits into two panels that slide over the inner cross trusses. The panels are made up of five air-inflatable cushions measuring 72×7 meters, positioned between six steel hybrid trusses with a span of 72.5 meters. Additionally, during the assembly process, the main truss, which served as a guide for the other trusses, transmits vertical loads to two new evacuation towers on the west side and two linked pendulums integrated into the building on the east side, while completely isolating horizontal loads from the existing structure. The redevelopment of the stadium also includes the installation of a video scoreboard. *For more details, please refer to the PDF materials or feel free to contact us. [BIM Software Implementation Case Study] Tripla Project

Expanding the scope of BIM application and demonstrating its effectiveness in various processes! Case studies from large-scale construction sites.

The development project of Tripla, located in the center of Pasila, Helsinki, the capital of Finland, utilizes BIM tools for various design tasks. The project's procurement team efficiently calculates quantities of construction materials by leveraging the BIM model. "Tekla Structures" allows for the aggregation and classification of cost estimation information under various conditions, enabling the visualization of costs at detailed levels, such as by work process or contractor, which aids in accurately understanding estimated prices. Additionally, the Tekla model has achieved significant results in examining the feasibility of construction, such as investigating the delivery routes for escalators to be installed within the building.
